Why were Gatsby's parties expensive?

Gatsby's parties were expensive and crowded with strangers. They attracted attention, gossip, and portrayed him as a man with money and stature. In essence, they did exactly what he wanted them to do..... they attracted the attention of Daisy's friends, and eventually, Daisy herself.
