Nick really wants to believe the best about Gatsby. He has heard rumors of Gatsby's underhanded dealings, criminal past, and links to the German Kaiser. Nick finds it refreshing that Gatsby confides the truth about Oxford. Nick likes the fact that it diminishes Tom's accusation that Gatsby is phony.
