Why do you suppose that Jordan does not believe Gatsby when he says that he had attended Oxford College in England?

Gatsby didn't fit that image of an oxford man. People that attended Oxford generally came from old money (money inherited through generations) and Gatsby looks and acts like he comes from new money. His last name is also not connected to wealth.
