The character of Trimlchio appears in an ancient satire. His character is a man who appears and acts as if he's rich. Gatsby and Trimalchio are alike in that they present themselves as something they're not. Trimalchio appear to be rich, but he is not. Gatsby has attained wealth, but his wealth does not make him the man he attempts to be.
