Trimalchio was the protagonist in Petronius' Satyricon. As a freedman, he gained notariety through determination and hard work. After amassing an enormous amount of wealth, he, like Gatsby, threw opulent and impressive parties. Both Gatsby and Trimalchio were rich (not born rich) and desirous of attention.
