Meyer is notorious underworld figure, Wolfsheim is a business associate of Gatsby. He is deeply involved in organized crime, and even claims credit for fixing the 1919 World Series. He links Gatsby to crime and the iunderworld. His appearance is a symbol that separates Gatsby's wealth from the old money of East Egg. He links Gatsby to his fortune made from bootlegging.
