The Great Gatsby

what is the significance of this quote? "Now, in the reaction, he was running down like an overwound clock."

CH 5. Nick said this. Is there any symbolism or anagogic meaning?

This symbolizes Gatsby's disappointment..... he was so excited and had waited so long for what he believed he wanted, but after Daisy leaves Nick can see that the reality didn't match up with the illusion. His feelings weren't the same, so his emotions had begun to wind down like an over wound clock.
