Nick Carraway is the narrator in this novel. Shortly after returning from WW1, he finds employment in New York. He moves to Long Island in a small town called West Egg. He finds a small bungalow sandwiched between mansions of the newly rich. Across the bay is East Egg. This is the place of "old money", aristocracy that is the elite establishment. Nick frequently visits his cousin Daisy and her husband Tom. Their neighbour is a mysterious man named Jay Gatsby. Gatspy throws lavish parties that he rarely attends. Gatsby is illusive leading to all kinds of rumors about him including that he might have made his fortune as a criminal.Nick eventually recieves an invitation to one of Gatsby's parties.Eventually Nick does meet Gatsby and so begins a very strange relationship.
