Love in The Great Gatsby is portrayed as an illusion..... Gatsby's love for Daisy is built on a dream that doesn't exist, and Daisy's feelings for Gatsby are a direct result of a bad, unloving marriage. In the end, however, the dream isn't real, and for Daisy, perception is everything.
