I think Gatsby represents the excitement of something real. You are correct; Tom and Daisy live a life void of any real meaning. They go to parties, drink and spend money. They operate on a superficial and predictable level taking everything, including each other, for granted. Gatsby is mysterious. He does not quite fit in with the filthy rich. Gatsby's life is not predictable and his past is rumored to be checkered. Daisy finds this rawness enticing.
