What did we learn about the history of daisy and Gatsby?

Daisy and Gatsby were once in love, but Gatsby went away and had to gain the wealth that he believed would make Daisy happy. He was astonished that she married someone else and that she had not waited for him, although they never really made a firm promise about such waiting.
