Can you be more specific where or what chapter in the story you mean?

This's chapter 6. Im' sorry

Gatsby is extremely private about his past. He does not want Daisy to know that he comes from a humble working background. A reporter, inspired by the feverish gossip about Gatsby circulating in New York, comes to West Egg in hopes of obtaining the true story of his past from him. Though Gatsby himself turns the man away, Nick interrupts the narrative to relate Gatsby's past (the truth of which he only learned much later) to the reader.
