The parties that Gatsby threw would have been monumental. They were examples of the decedent excess that the 1920's had to offer. People went to be awed by the alcohol fueled spectacle that Gatsby's parties became known for.

"Every Friday, five crates of oranges and lemons arrive from a fruiterer in New York as well as 8 helpers, and an extra gardener. Every Monday these same things left his back door".
