What ambiguity in Gatsby's character strike Nick?

Nick has always been impressed by Gatsby's confidence yet, as he examines Gatsby further, he big gins to see this confidence as superficial. There are cracks and beneath them, Gatsby is vulnerable and alone. Gatsby throws these parties but remains on the outside looking in.
