The Great Gatsby

The great gatsby chapeter 7

5. Gatsby mentions absentmindedly that it took him “just three years to earn the money” to buy his impressive house. Why does this comment strike Nick as strange, and how does Gatsby explain his comment?

This is in Chapter 5. Nick is trying his best to woo Daisy. He knows she likes money and opulence and saying this bodes well for him. He explains that Daisy was his muse for all of it, "He hadn't once ceased looking at Daisy, and I think he revalued everything in the house according to the measure of response it drew from her well-loved eyes."
