Is Nick Carraway necessary to this story?

I think Nick's narrative voice is necessary to a story like this. Nick has the voice and personality of an outsider. Readers can identify with Nick's middle class background and sober sense of judgment. Nick is a flat enough character to let the reader experience this world first hand without a personal bias or manipulation.
