Gatsby fabricates his past in chapter 4. He makes it up to win Nick's approval. Fitzgerald decides to reveal the truth about Gatsby's past later on to clarify all the events and put them in context. Fitzgerald most likely wanted the reader to be clear on Gatsby's past so the reader can make better sense of theme and character.
