How is tom being a bully affect the story ?

I think it really means that all he has going for him is his money. Unfortunately, for Daisy, that seems to be enough. Tom's bullying affects the story in that it is part of the empty negative energy that pervades East Egg. Nick struggles to find something morally redeeming about these people. Tom Buchanan represents the abusive alpha male always getting his way.
