How does Fitzgerald present the idea of religion wthin the novel and what function does it have on the story?

Religion doesn't have a big part in the novel. Myrtle's sister claims Tom won't divorce Daisy because they're Catholic.... but they're not. Thus, religion is used as an excuse for bad behavior....
