The Great Gatsby

How can I start the great Gatsby essay?

The topic "Is Gatsby great?

I tried looking for a quote that could summarize how great he is, I was going to use "[Gatsby's smile] a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life....It understood you just as far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself." But I don't know if that summarizes how great he is.

I'm not asking for anyone to do the whole essay just a beginning to get me started

Also here are some of the things I was going to mention about his greatness:

-American Dream

-Hope (for daisy)

-Money didn't change him

-Made everyone happy by throwing huge parties

Thank you in advance :)

Sure, then you might start with something like this:

"To many readers the character of Gatsby is an enigma. He prefers be aloof, a mere shadow in the world of the ultra rich. It isn't until this absurd world of the ultra rich is examined that Gatsby comes more into focus. Unlike the vapid lives of the theses East Eggers, Gatsby has a different purpose for his excesses......"

Then I'd spend the rest of your essay using your points to define Gatsby as great.

You need to consider if you think Gatsby is great or not. Gatsby is an enigma, we can take him in many ways. What will you be arguing?

I think Gatsby is great. I'm going to say what I listed up there but counterargument would be, he did illegal things, he lied about many things, and changed his identity

Thank you so much for your help!(:

Have a good one.

No worries!
