I like this quote from Nick to Gatsby,

“They’re a rotten crowd,” I shouted across the lawn. “You’re worth the whole damn bunch put together.”

It pretty much sums up Nick's attitude to the people of East Egg. By chapter 8 Nick is sick of them. He is sick of their petty vacuous concerns, he is sick of how they use and treat Gatsby. To Nick Gatsby is an enigma but still firmly from his side of the fence. Gatsby did not come from old entitled money but rather from a poorer background than his own. This quote is probably what has been simmering in Nick since he met Gatsby and the rotten society of East Egg.
