The Great Gatsby

Chapter 8 Questions

“’Jay Gatsby’ had broken up like glass against Tom’s hard malice.” This is a wonderfully descriptive sentence. Elaborate on what makes this simile so apt. What does it tell you about the characters, and how does it relate to a theme in the novel?

Tom Buchanan is a self absorbed jerk in every definition of the word. While Gsatsby is a hopeless romantic lost in his illusion of love for Daisy, Tom is the antithesis. His hardness and callous treatment of the idea of love and Gatsby shatters Gatsby like glass. It is really an ugly reality against the innocence of dreams.
