In Chapter Three, Ghosh notes that climate change isn't often discussed in literary fiction, and that books that do address climate change are genterally classified as science fiction, which causes them to be marginalized by the literary establishment.

In Chapter Five, Ghosh talks about his years as a student at Delhi University (1978), during which time, he was a witness to the first tornado recorded in the city's history. The tornado killed 30 people and injured 700.
