Flossing becomes a bone of contention for Julian and Yale.... a mundane conversation and argument that somehow reflects the way they each find importance in taking care of themeselves..... even in the face of death. Julian refuses to floss, leaving us to believe that he has dismissed the idea of fighting off cancer and will simply succumb to his fate. Yale’s determination to floss..... with Julian’s floss, no less, suggests that he is determined to stay alive,. Ironically, it is Julian who survives, and Yale who dies. In essence.... the floss seems to represent the wearisome, unremarkable thoughts that become important when death is imminent.
