why does tom break the cap to make it look older?

I am not sure that is was to make the cap look older. Tom is walking in the hot sun, and my guess is that he creased it in order to keep the sun out of his face. He repeats the action in the same chapter, after talking to the preacher, on his way off again, saying " I hate to hit the sun, but it ain't so bad now."
