Comment on existentialism of Jim Casey. How is this ironic?

Casey seems to have let go of religion in favour of a more existentialist philosophy:

"There ain't no sin and there ain't no virtue. There's just stuff people do. It's all a part of the same thing. Maybe all men got one big soul everybody's a part of."
