What are the particular struggles in The Good Earth, and why do they matter?

There are so many struggles here, I don't even know where to begin. Hard work, poverty, revolution, theft, murdering one's own child, betrayal, distrust, wealth, adultery (more than one wife), family squabbles..... and so on and so on.

These problems matter because they mold our character into the people we see them become.
