What is the meaning/purpose of the film?

Rather, what was Chaplin's intention for making the film?

Chaplin's main purpose in filming The Gold Rush was to prove his belief that tragedy and ridicule are never far apart. He took the chaotic, news accounts of the gold rush and combined them with the 1846 tragedy of the Donner party, who were trapped in the Sierra Nevadas and made a comedy. Shockingly, he pulled it off and proved his point.
