how does this text fit into a course about fairy-tale-inspired literature

I never saw this as a fairy tale. I have heard of the book being described as such but I'm inclined to thinking this alludes to India as a land of some kind of mystery. The social mores like caste system combined with the many levels of meaning on religion and society tend to give the story a fairy-tale like appearance.
