That is why he never advances in his job. He spends the lighting bill money to join the mercent marines. The story itself is a means of escape. Laura escapes he world and into the world of galss figures. Amanda escapes by telling her old stories of when she was at blue mountain.

Tom also goes to the movies because he likes watching those on the screen have adventures and that makes him want them to.
