Williams created this play to be a memory play. Tom takes you on a journey back to the tenement of st. Louis. The plays stage direction describe the set decoration as flowing sheer like curtains that are sof and whimsical giving you the feeling as if you were dreaming. He invitesbyou in to their lives by taking away the fourth wall. Magic playsa role because Tom goes to see a magic show and feels taken away by whatbthe magician performed. He brings back a soft flowing scarf for Laura.
