What could Jeannette have asked of Rose Mary that would have been similar to the birthday gift she asked for from Rex?

Jeannette could have asked her mother to support her father giving up drinking. Jeanette wanted nothing more than for her mother to stand up to her father.... she wanted her mother to assert herself or leave. Rose Mary makes a lot of threats but never goes through with them.
