Why does Jonas's society match spouses instead of letting people choose their spouses?

The Elders make all of the decisions regarding everything in an individuals life. They match spouses and appropriate children. I think its appalling. None-the-less, there are many societies in existence today, where parents still arrange marriages. It's not quite the same, but it's something for you to ponder.
