I think that Jonas realizes that his father, who seems gentle, actually knows what released meant. The child was basically killed off.

Jonas thinks about his experience on the playing field after watching his father release the baby because he notices the gestures of a dead person in the memory of war. And so he memorized the playing field because the was killed and so were the soldiers.
