Why can't the kids pick their own job?
Why do the adults pick the jobs and not the kids?

Everyone in the community is assigned their jobs. Children do not choose their jobs, and adults cannot change their jobs. The Committee of elders carefully chooses a job for each of the twelves based upon their character traits.
