The book's society values conformity and ignorance. The community is really a dystopia where adults have the emotional maturity of children. People are expected to follow a rigid set of rules without questioning them. As a result, their "happiness" is very contrived and superficial. As long as the people do what the Elders mandate, they live their lives in blissful ignorance until they are "released."
