what does the books society supress in chapters 1-5

This society is all about suppression. Emotions, physical attraction, the ability to choose, the ability to be different.... special..... all these things are suppressed in the name of sameness. Families are chosen, love is an unknown commodity, passion isn't allowed, pain is unheard of...... even the memory of these things is kept from the community.
