Jonas now feels a depth of feeling that he never knew was possible. Superficial emotions that his family and friends experience are nothing like intense emotions like rage and despair that he feels through memories given to him. Jonas must mature quickly to be able to handle this depth of emotion. The memories that the Giver transmits are both painful and enlightening. Jonas soon finds he has little in common with his friends and family. His experiences have given him an emotional maturity far beyond the people that he knows.
