I wouldn't say this society is perfect. The author meant this to be a dystopia. Beneath perceived contentment is a lot of ugliness. Women being torn away from their babies, children and old people being "released" (killed). Any happiness people feel is superficial lacking any depth or meaning. The main community have no concept of pain so how can they understand happiness.
