Laura, unlike the rest of her family, seems to have a social conscience. She does not want the party to happen because of the recent death of Mr. Scott. The new hat her mother gives her distracts Laura from her empathy. I think that Laura does gain some perspective after seeing the dead body of Mr. Scott. Some critics think that Laura was able to comtemplate life and that death comes to all classes of people. Perhaps Laura had lost some of her innocence that day.
