The Fly (1986 Film) Summary

The film opens with Seth, a scientist meeting Veronica, who he doesn't know is a science journalist at a press event where she was sent to find a story. He convinces her to come back to his home where he tells her he has an invention he wants to show her. It is teleportation devices that are capable of sending inanimate objects from one pod to another. Veronica wants to write a story on Seth but he opposes and so does her editor Stathis who believes Seth to be a con man.

Seth invites Veronica to have full access to his process as he works to make the telepods capable of teleporting live tissue, and even videotaping his journal entries all to write an extensive book. She agrees and soon after the pair make love. Stathis, it turns out is Veronica's ex. He threatens to put Seth on the cover of his magazine as he is jealous of their relationship. When Veronica goes to confront Stathis, Seth puts himself through the teleportation device after having successfully transported a baboon earlier. But, when he goes through there is a fly inside the pod with him.

Seth admits his being upset by Veronica running to Stathis. They are able to reconcile, and Seth begins to have heightened sensations and even physical capabilities of a gymnast he never had before. He believes the teleportation device purified his body, but Veronica becomes concerned with course hairs growing out of Seth's back and his strange behavior. When Veronica won't go through the teleportation device Seth throws her out of his warehouse and goes to a bar to pick up a woman to send through the device. Veronica shows up to stop Seth from sending her through.

Soon after Seth's fingernails begin to fall off and his face begins to have thick hairs and seems to be mutating. He begins to believe something went wrong and checks his computer's data records which reveal that there were two lifeforms that went through in his teleportation--him and a fly. And, the fly has been absorbed within him at the molecular level. Seth continues to deform looking less human every day, vomiting digestive enzymes to dissolve his food along with losing his compassion and human reasoning.

Seth attempts to dilute the fly gene in his body by installing a fusion program in the telepod. And, we learn that Veronica is pregnant with Seth's child which she does not want to keep; even having a nightmare about giving birth to a giant maggot. She has an abortion with the help of Stathis' persuading a doctor to do so, but Seth kidnaps her before the procedure begging her to keep the child--it's his last remaining piece of humanity. Stathis then breaks into Seth's lab to kill Seth, but Seth vomits the digestive enzymes on his hand and leg, leaving him mutilated. Seth then reveals that he is going to attempt to fuse Veronica, the baby inside of her and himself together through the telepod. Seth's jaw is accidentally ripped off in the process and he becomes a giant fly as all of his human skin rips away. He locks her into the machine as the countdown ticks. Seth enters the second telepod, and Stathis, still mangled uses his shotgun to blow away the connection between Veronica's pod and the computer and releases her from the telepod. Seth, now the fly tries to escape his pod but is fused with the metal door as the teleportation sequence begins. He crawls out and grabs the shotgun, now in Veronica's hands and puts it to his head. She shoots and kills him.
