Why do Eddie and Joe conflict on Eddie's 17th birthday? How is the conflict resolved?

Joe gives Eddie a hard time about a girl he met the night before. He teases Eddie about the way they danced, and the fact that Eddie said he was going to marry her. This frustrates and embarrasses Eddie.
