There is some type of metaphysical connection between the house and the Ushers. The house is the physical manifestation of a diseased and dying family. The "vacant eye-like windows" and the "gloom" of the house foreshadows the condition of Usher and his sister Madeline. After Madeline's death and entombment, we Roderick's eyes become like the windows of the house:

The luminousness of his eye had utterly gone out. ... I beheld him gazing upon vacancy for long hours ...
