The Fall of the House of Usher

In "The Fall of the House of Usher", what is the significance of the vapour or condensation of atmosphere surrounding the house?

Do you think that Edgar Allan Poe just used this to emphasize the gothic feel of the story? Or did it actually contribute to the story in someway that I can't figure out? Thanks!

The atmosphere wreaks of decay..... this is significant because nothing about the Holuse of Usher has life.
