What you wrote is a snapshot of the plot. There are so many themes in this book to consider. Some of them include identity, coming of age, war, anti-semitism and what it means to be Jewish. One has to only picture in their mind what a Jewish adolescent girl might have to deal with hauled up in a room waiting for Nazis to knock on her door. Rather than rambling on, I'm going to give you a link to the GradeSaver site that deals with your query in greater detail.
