Are you referring to the play?

"The Van Daans’ “discussions” are as violent as ever." certainly this is unpleasant to hear, especially in such close quarters.

"chimes and then a hymn being played on the carillon outside." This would of course be pleasant to hear music. They had to be very quiet in their rooms.

"The buzzer of the door below suddenly sounds" This always puts people on edge.

"She rushes off to her room, slamming the door after her." Anne slams her door after her fight with mother over Peter. This unsettles the whole house.
