Miep Gies, Johannes Kleiman, Victor Kugler, and Bep Voskuijl all bring items and news to the annex. In Section Eight, we learn that food is short in the annex. They go through "food cycles" where they only eat one type of food--right now they are in the midst of a "bean cycle" and there are no vegetables available. The shortage began when the people who sold them illegal food coupons were caught.
