why did hannah refuse to do the reading at the dinner table

I didn't see the movie but I read the book! Hannah is a typical teen tired of the endless rituals and traditions demanded by her faith. Reading from scripture was something that she did not enjoy or feel a duty to do. This, of course, sets us up for her transcendental trip into the past.
