One conflict revolves around Hannah Hannah complaining grumbling about the boredom of her life. She is disinterested in the monotony of her traditions and strives to distance herself from her family and her heritage. Experiencing the Holocaust gives her greater meaning and appreciation for her family and Heritage.

Hannah experiences the conflict of being Jewish and oppressed during the 1940's. She certainly understands her religious identity better through the story.

Hannah has to decide how to survive in the camp and what really is important to her. Hannah abandons many of her adolescent immaturities during her time in camp. she comes to understand what is really important to her.
