THey felt that both cities were elitist self promoters who easily got tourists to visit largely because of their two attractions (New york's statue of Liberty and Paris's Eiffel tower). Chicago had some rather low self-esteem. They felt New York considered them a "greedy, hog-slaughtering backwater...".
